Carnation is an whole year round product.

The flowers must be kept at a temperature of 4 - 8 degrees Celcius, 40 degrees Fharenheit.
Standard carnation have a tendency to break, especially in winter. This necessitates special packing.
During transport in containers damage to overhanging flowers may be restricted by surrounding the carts with crinkle foil.
Carnations are very sensitive to Ethylene gas. Fresh / riping fruit, vegetables and exhause fumes produce a lot Ethylene gas.
Now that the Dutch growers pre-treat all carnations with special anti-Ethylane products, this need no longer create a problem.
However take the precaution of avoiding direct contact with important sources of Ethylane gas.
Carnation are reasonably tolerant of dry storage.
Cooling the boxes before dispatch to the custumer will reduce loss of quality.

Information for the Retailer :

Best storage temperature 4 till 8 degrees Celcius.
Keep in clean water.
Carnations are less sensitive to drying out than other cut flowers, but they are very intolerant of Ethylane gas.
Since Dutch growers now pre-treat all carnations with special anti- Ethylane substances this need no longer present a problem.
However, it is advisable to take the pre-caution of avoiding direct contact with important sources of Ethylane, such as ripening fruit or vegetables, exhaust fumes etc.

Information for the Consumer :

Using a sharp knife, cut approx, 1 cm from the stalks.
Place the flowers in a clean vase with clean water with Crysal or a similar nutrient. Ask your florist for this flower food.
A nutrient encourages more beatiful, larger flowers of a better colour.

The flowers must be kept at a temperature of 4 -8 degrees Celcius

Do not ship the flowers as a mixed lead with fruit and vegitable, due producing of Ethylane gas

Spray - Carnations are very sensitive to ethylene gas.

Pre-Cooling the flowers

Pre-cooling consists of forcing cold air through the boxes. A damp cooling system is preferred to minimize dehydration.
Pre-cooling may also be useful for the importing wholesaler, if the boxes are to be forwarded.
Pre-coling boxes may be closely stacked in order to remain as cool as possible.
Pre-cooled boxes must also be transported in cool conditions.
